A Travel Guide to Île de la Cité in Paris

On Île de la Cité, you’ll find some of the most important historical monuments that have made Paris so iconic in the world. There is the magnificent Notre Dame de Paris Cathedral of course (which is unfortunately under reconstruction after the terrible fire that struck the cathedral on April 15th 2019), but you’ll also find the incredibly stunning Sainte-Chapelle, the infamous Conciergerie and the beautiful flower market. Île de la Cité is a remarkable microcosm not to be missed. A must-see in Paris!

Depending on which farm you visit, there is a variety of fun activities to do for children from petting and feeding the animals to walks in the wood, workshops, picking your own fruits and vegetables, and much more.

Ile Saint-Louis: A Quaint Village in the Heart of Paris

We may have heard a lot about Ile de la Cité but have you heard of its quieter neighbor, Ile Saint-Louis? Ile Saint-Louis is one of the only 2 remaining natural islands located on the Seine river in the heart of Paris (the other one is ‘Ile de la Cité’ known worldwide for its internationally famous Notre-Dame Cathedral). Ile Saint-Louis only spans 11-hectares, yet the island is very lively with plenty of restaurants, cafés and boutiques to discover.

Why the Buttes-Chaumont Park in Paris is a perfect spot for a day out

Another beautiful hidden gem to discover in the nineteenth: The Park des Buttes Chaumont.
The Park is a 25-hectare public park located in the 19th arrondissement, in the northeastern side of Paris. It is one of the 4 Parisian parks created by Emperor Napoleon III to offer the Parisians 4 major green spaces around the city: the Bois de Boulogne in the western part, the Bois de Vincennes in the eastern part, the Parc Montsouris in the southern part and the Parc des Buttes-Chaumont in the northern part.

The Catacombs of Paris : An Underground City of the Dead

The Paris Catacombs are underground ossuaries which hold the skeletal remains of over 6 million deceased Parisians. The Paris Catacombs (the ossuary that is open to the public) occupy a tiny part of the former stone quarries of Paris; only 1.7km is accessible to the public. What locals call the “Catacombs” are actually a massive network of about 300km long (!!!) underground tunnels and galleries which lie underneath Paris (below the metro and the sewer system). And those former quarries are a massive playground for the Cataphiles!

An unusual place to visit in Paris: The Russian Orthodox Church of St-Sergius

Want to do something unique in Paris this weekend? Visit the Orthodox Church of St-Sergius. The St-Sergius Church (Eglise ‘Saint-Serge de Radonège’) is a Russian Orthodox church located near the Park des ‘Buttes-Chaumont’. It is probably one of the less known churches in Paris but well worth the visit if you are nearby. Ready for a trip to Russia?

Grand Mosque of Paris, A Taste of Morocco in the heart of Paris

If you are visiting the Latin Quarter, take a moment to stop by the Grand Mosque of Paris and/or take a cup of tea and traditional pastries in its café. Do not forget to visit the gorgeous garden. You can also find a library, a tearoom, a restaurant and a hammam in the premises of the Mosque. It’s off-the-beaten-path but definitely worth a visit!
